Visiting Consultant: Mr Dan Plev – Spinal Assessment, Treatment and Surgery

4 February 2025

We are delighted to welcome Mr Dan Plev, a highly skilled Consultant Neurosurgeon, to First Contact Health on 21st and 22nd February 2025.

With extensive experience in spinal assessment, treatment, and surgery, Mr Plev provides holistic, patient-centred care for a wide range of spinal conditions.

About Mr Dan Plev

Mr Dan Plev is a highly experienced spinal surgeon, specialising in spinal assessment, treatment, and surgery. He is a recognised expert in kyphoplasty cement augmentation for fractures, as well as in endoscopic discectomies and nucleoplasties.

An accomplished educator, Mr Plev is a guest lecturer at international neurosurgical and spinal conferences, and actively contributes to hands-on teaching courses for medical professionals. He is also involved in various patient support organisations, including the Artificial Disc Replacement Support Group.

Mr Plev’s approach to patient care is rooted in his philosophy of treating every patient as he would a member of his own family. He takes a holistic approach to management, prioritising the least invasive options to improve patient outcomes whenever possible.

A graduate of Mainz University, Mr Plev (MD FANCH) completed his training in Phoenix, AZ, USA, before finishing his neurosurgical training in Munich, Germany. His MD was awarded for his pioneering immunohistological research on proliferation markers in gliomas and meningiomas. During his training, he gained extensive experience in treating a wide range of spinal disorders, from degenerative conditions to complex tumour cases.

Looking ahead, Mr Plev plans to incorporate stem cell therapies into the treatment of spinal conditions, with the expectation that these therapies will soon be available.

Mr Plev follows a stepladder approach to treatment: beginning with a thorough diagnosis and the most conservative management options, such as physiotherapy and injections. If necessary, he then progresses to minimally invasive procedures, such as nucleoplasty and endoscopy, before considering more complex interventions like spinal fusions or disc replacements.

Before transitioning to full-time private healthcare in 2009, Mr Plev was a consultant neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospitals. He currently works closely with The London Spine Clinic, where he continues to collaborate with their multidisciplinary team on complex spinal cases.
