Degenerative Disc Disease Pain

Degenerative disc disease refers to symptoms of back or neck pain caused by wear-and-tear on a spinal disc. Due to our spinal disks being composed of a soft inner core and a tough outer core, as we age the soft inner core that’s made of a soft jelly-like substance starts to dry out and become thinner. This creates less cushioning between the vertebrae and can cause pain due to the rubbing of the joints. Another cause is minor injuries being sustained over the years and if the soft tissue surrounding the nerves may be very sensitive and painful.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain in the back, lower back, buttock and even in the upper thighs (this depends on which vertebrae was affected)
  • Pain fades in and fades away at intervals
  • Pain exacerbates when bending, lifting or twisting
  • Pain is worse whilst sitting
  • Pain subsides whilst lying down and moving/ changing positions often
