Knee Osteoarthritis

Chronic knee pain can severely impact your quality of life and whilst it can result from injury the most common cause is Osteoarthritis.

Chronic knee pain can severely impact your quality of life and though it can also be as the result of an injury, the most common cause is Osteoarthritis. In Osteoarthritis, knee cartilage becomes damaged through natural wear and tear so the bones have little or no protection to prevent them rubbing against each other, this is often compounded by a reduction of synovial fluid, your knee’s natural lubricant, so when you move the joint it can cause intense pain.

Until recently options for treatment have revolved around to steroid injections, which provide temporary relief, or knee replacement, which is a costly, major surgical intervention.

Arthrosamid® is a revolutionary treatment for knee osteoarthritis that can offer an effective, long-term alternative to steroid injections or replacement surgery.

How does it work?

Arthrosamid® is what’s known as an ‘intra- articular polyacrylamide hydrogel injection’ this means that a non-biodegradable hydrogel is injected into your knee joint cavity, restoring the consistency of your synovial fluid, improving lubrication and the cushioning of the joint.

Arthrosamid® also integrates into the synovium (lining of your inner joint capsule) creating a cushion-like effect and blocking the inflammation pathways that can cause knee pain.

What is involved?

At your Arthrosamid® appointment, you will get a local anaesthetic followed by your injection.

This is an out-patient procedure that means you can go home the same day.

You should avoid any strenuous weight-bearing activities (e.g. running, tennis, or long walks) for the first few days after your injection and during this time you may experience some localised pain or swelling around the injection site.

Arthrosamid® studies indicate that following successful treatment, pain reduces and joint mobility improves within two months and improvement is maintained for up to three years.

Prices are £2,250 for one knee and £3,950 for two knees – just a fraction of the cost of knee replacement surgery.
